Starting June 1, India is scheduled to participate in Group A alongside Ireland, Pakistan, and Canada at the 9th ICC T20 World Cup held in the USA and West Indies.
Former pacer S Sreesanth has already selected his India squad for this tournament, drawing heavily upon their 2023 ODI World Cup squad as his blueprint.
Player List
Rohit Sharma will continue as India captain in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The right-handed batsman impressed at last year’s ODI World Cup and should see similar success this time around in its shortest format as well. India is scheduled to play Afghanistan ahead of starting their ICC event, scheduled to commence June 5th. India has been drawn in Group A alongside arch-rival Pakistan, hosts USA, and Canada – each country looking for victory.
Suryakumar Yadav has excelled in T20I cricket for India and stands as India’s best option as the No 1 opener in T20 Internationals (T20Is). He has scored more than 1000 runs in T20Is alone and will look to shine during the World Cup as well. Yadav can rely on Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as backup options in opening positions respectively.
Virat Kohli will look to make an impactful middle-order statement this T20 World Cup. After being outstanding in ODI matches last year, Virat can look forward to performing similarly under pressure in T20s too. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rinku Singh can provide support.
Hardik Pandya will miss action due to an injury, creating an opportunity for Shivam Dube. The Mumbai-based medium pacer has been in superb form for CSK during IPL 2023 as both batsman and bowler; pairing him with Washington Sundar and Axar Patel as third bowlers may prove most successful in terms of making an impressionful statement about team CSK’s intent in IPL 2023. Yuzvendra Chahal will play an integral part in the tournament; featuring twenty teams divided into four groups of five teams each group; two from each group will advance to the Super 8 round; which will see semi-final and final matches take place.
Team List
The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup will be hosted in the USA and Men in Blue are set to launch their campaign on June 5. Twenty teams have been divided into four groups of five with only the top two from each moving on to compete in the Super 8 stage of competition.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will form India’s squad for the event, having performed admirably in this format of cricket for their national side. Kohli led India’s T20 World Cup campaign in Australia as top run scorer; and as one of India’s finest cricketers ever. Expect him to lead India once more!
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal may both feature as openers; both have been performing exceptionally in recent times and can serve as backup options if required. Suryakumar Yadav has also been in outstanding form lately and should feature among the middle-order batsmen.
Rinku Singh stands a good chance of being selected in the final squad, being an aggressive batsman with the potential to turn around games quickly. He has made an impressionful showing during his limited appearances for India so far.
Ravindra Jadeja should be selected in the bowling lineup, given his proven credentials in the Caribbean region. Axar Patel may also cut as both left-farmers have proven reliable for national team cricket while providing slow bowling options as well.
Announcement
The International Cricket Council has confirmed the dates for the 2024 T20 World Cup. It will take place across North America and the West Indies with India set to commence their campaign against Ireland on 5 June in New York – they have been drawn into Group A alongside arch-rival Pakistan, hosts USA/Canada as well as minnow Ireland.
Sreesanth, former India pacer, has already unveiled his predicted Indian squad for the event. This reflects many players from India’s 2023 ODI World Cup squad but also includes Rohit Sharma as skipper rather than Hardik Pandya due to experience.
Rohit’s comeback to India’s T20 side was an enormous boost, given his proven record. He led all scorers in the 2022 T20 World Cup as the top scorer and will serve as India’s go-to man during this tournament.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rinku Singh will make for two newcomers in India’s T20 squad this year, having made an impression during limited opportunities and with good prospects of making the trip to the USA for the tournament.
Jasprit Bumrah will also play an instrumental role in India T20 2024 edition. The right-arm pacer has been superb since his comeback and will be one of the cornerstones in their squad.
Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh are two strong contenders to join India’s T20 World Cup squad, as both bowlers have had stellar years. The Board of Control for Cricket in India should soon make its decision regarding the T20 World Cup squad.
Captain
The India-Afghanistan series provided team management with an invaluable opportunity to assess players before the marquee event, providing insight into the composition of the squad which may result in some players being dropped from it.
Rohit Sharma will lead India at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as captain. After impressing during last year’s ODI World Cup with his leadership skills, the right-hand batsman should easily step into this leadership role again this time around – having led India successfully during this tournament previously. Rohit is well suited to leading his side’s campaign!
India will only field Rohit as their T20 World Cup captain due to Hardik Pandya being injured and unavailable to play, who impressed selectors with his performances and batting skills during IPL 2017. Rohit will play an essential role for India during this tournament.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are two pacers who excel in West Indies conditions with their swing bowling. Both players have excelled for India in T20I cricket and proven themselves worthy of India’s short-format throne.
The International Cricket Council Twenty20 World Cup 2024 will take place from June 1-30 in the United States and West Indies, featuring 20 teams – an increase from 16 teams that competed in the previous edition. England are the defending champions, so this ninth edition promises to be thrilling!
Will Rishabh Pant Play T20 World Cup 2024?
Team India faces a tremendous task ahead as they head into the ICC T20 World Cup tournaments in West Indies and America this month, as well as preparations for their upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan. Rohit Sharma should lead Team India during this tournament given his impressive ODI World Cup performance but there will likely be fierce competition for spots within their 2024 T20 squad.
Selectors have allowed youngsters like Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel to shine at the T20 World Cup 2024 edition. Both batsmen have proven their worth in T20 formats, adding power and speed to national sides in T20 matches while being handy targets for bowlers.
Jasprit Bumrah has become one of the standout bowlers in the T20I format over recent years and can provide strength in numbers for India in Caribbean conditions. He can assist their pace attack as part of their campaign.
Sanju Samson could be considered for wicket-keeping duty given his excellent showing against Afghanistan in T20Is and as an all-round finisher. With Ishan Kishan currently taking an indefinite break and KL Rahul not receiving much consideration from selectors, Samson could well become the backup keeper.
